Darleen DeRosa, Ph.D., is a managing partner at OnPoint Consulting. She brings ten years of management consulting experience, with expertise in the areas of talent/succession management, executive assessment, virtual teams, and organizational assessment. Darleen has authored numerous articles on virtual teams.

Richard Lepsinger is president of OnPoint Consulting and has a twenty-year track record of success as a human resource consultant and executive. Decent read for those new to leadership; especially leading virtual employees

I do like how the book can be used as a "handbook", allowing you to flip to the relevant pages of the book for your needs (as opposed to having to read it straight through). I was a little disappointed in the content because it was somewhat basic, and I had expected more from a book with its price tag. Quite honestly, when I opened the package I was surprised to see how thin the book is with larger font; and then led to further disappointment with the afforementioned lack of content. I then found a number of typos and incorrect grammar. I'm not usually that particular about my books, but had higher expectations based on the cost.
Even with my disappointment, I give it an "It's okay" because it does include good fundamentals that are always worth re-visiting.

Very simplistic

It is very much a new managers book, and pretty theoretical; unfortunately light on practical techniques. This is one of the kindle books I wish I could return. Lots of words, however low actionable content. I can imagine this book being a great book in the mid to late 1990s.

Pretty disappointed.

A Must Read for Leaders of Virtual Teams

I had to purchase this book for my Graduate program. This book is a great read for anyone who deals with virtual teams, whether they are national or international. The information is set up in a very user friendly manner and flows nicely. It kept my interest but the best part of the book is that you do not have to read it from page one and on. You can view the chapters in the beginning and choose which chapter fits your current situation. All of the chapters can sit alone which makes this a gem for those who deal with virtual teams. If you are having specific issues with your team, you can skip right to that area of the book and find the answers to your problems. I did not have to read this whole book for my classes but intend on finishing up the chapters not assigned; it is that interesting.

Finally a series worth reading

I read over 30 books per year so it could be me being jaded, or just having read a lot of similarly tailored stories, but I usually don't much like most books I find for under $5. Even the ones with rave reviews and 5 star ratings fail to engage me and are at most a 3/5 stars for me, I read them to kill time while searching for the next great thing.

Not so with this book! It is a full 5 star adventure book in my mind. I was very surprised that from page 1 the book drew me in, I liked the character, writing style and the novel system the author has invented for his world. There are no wordy passages just to full pages, everything said is top the point and needed to move the story. It made reading the book engaging for me, never made me want to yawn or look at the clock. :)
The story line also resonated with me. I could see myself in place of the main hero. The decisions made sense, the battles felt like they could actually happen the way they are described. Nowhere did I feel like an artificial element was included just to save the hero, the plot, or distract from something that doesn't make sense. The unnatural and magical things make sense within the world.

Bottom line, I'm glad I clicked the Buy button on this book - I read it in less than a day, found another favorite author and am eagerly awaiting to start on the next book in the series. This is one case where I want the series to be long so I can immerse myself in the world for as long as possible.

He is a modern voice and the characters he writes feel like they are just one of your own crew

Did you ever fantasize about being in the book you are reading? Have you ever inserted yourself as the MC in a story? Well if you are from the 90's or 2000's then this the writer for you. He is a modern voice and the characters he writes feel like they are just one of your own crew. They are beyond relatable. They are people you know or likely have known in your life. With no noticeable romantic or ego driven exaggerations. Some of the most complete characters I have ever read. The descriptive style is marvelously done without going so far as "okay I get it! It's a room with a lot frills and engraved silver oak and gold inlays on the thing I don't give a damn about because I want know what is happening with the monster chasing for the last 100yds."

I could go on and on here about the perfect blend of technical game play, inspirational growth, and heart rending moments. With a healthy dose of comedy sprinkled throughout the entire story. But I will simply say this is the best series I have read since The Sword of Truth, and you would be a fool not to add this book to your reading list.

I recently discovered the LitRPG genre and have read mostly good LitRPG books and some that were just alright. The Land series are great LitRPG books. More importantly, They are great books, regardless of genre. Richter, the main character, FEELS like a real person. His moral dilemmas, jokes, mistakes, and motivations are all too human and he leaps off the pages. There are other important characters that all feel developed as well.

The RPG aspect of the book is well done and I can't wait until I see the prompt pop up on the page to see what Richter has unlocked. I feel like it's done in a non-disruptive way that keeps you in the story, while also excited to see what quest, item, or skill was found or modified.

There were some minor editing mistakes that I found, but they were easily overcome while reading. The story was just too good to let them stop me anyway!

I recommend this book to anyone, but if you're a Fantasy, Sci-Fi, or LitRPG book fan, you need to read this series. You won't be able to put it down.

About the Author
N. Gregory Mankiw is Robert M. Beren Professor of Economics at Harvard University. He studied economics at Princeton University and MIT. Dr. Mankiw is a prolific writer and a regular participant in academic and policy debates. His research includes work on price adjustment, consumer behavior, financial markets, monetary and fiscal policy, and economic growth. His published articles have appeared in academic journals, such as the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, and Quarterly Journal of Economics, and in more widely accessible forums, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Dr. Mankiw has been a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, an adviser to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Congressional Budget Office, and a member of the ETS test development committee for the advanced placement exam in economics. From 2003 to 2005, he served as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisers.

Great prep for the Aplia test questions

This study guide is ESSENTIAL if you are having difficulty with Aplia's Microeconomics. It is less wordy than the book and condenses main ideas for you. Each chapter's summary is followed by problems to work out, 15 true/false questions, and 20 multiple choice questions. These test your understanding of the ideas and your ability to apply them (unlike the textbook). Great prep for the Aplia test questions.

Good book, but doesn't really move the universe forward.

Coruscant nights is a new series within the star wars universe and it seems to contradict several things we know. Darth Vader was supposed to have killed all the Jedi except for Obi Wan(who he kills later) and Yoda(who dies of being 900 years old). Jax Paravan is running around alive and well however. Aside from that Jax also seems to have awesome thwarting Darth Vader powers despite Darth Vader being the strongest Jedi of all time. The numerous escapes seem reasonable enough the first few times, but eventually they add up and start to resemble plot armor. The story also seems a little pointless as nothing happens that will later impact the events of a New Hope, and Jax's victory seems extremely Pyrrhic. The writing style itself is of high quality, but the story line seems to amount to Jax staging daring escapes and rescue operations, but ultimately ending up worse than he started while Darth Vader marches around with the villain ball loudly declaring his own superiority and showing a lot of insecurity with his choice to fall to the dark side. Xizor head of Black Sun makes an appearance and those parts of the book are very entertaining and well done. Maybe the author was told he couldn't affect the main story line of the star wars universe. It is understandable, but unfortunate if that is the case. On the other hand maybe the series will continue and eventually have some sort of important effect for the eventual formation of the rebellion.

The welcome return of Jax Pavan and friends

I was pleasantly surprised when The Last Jedi was announced. Michael Reaves had penned the Coruscant Nights series a couple of years earlier and like many sci-fi/fantasy projects, it appeared to be a trilogy. Jax Pavan survived the pivotal encounter with Darth Vader at the end of Patterns of Force, so a sequel was certainly possible, but I didn't expect it to actually materialize. Here Mr. Reaves works with Maya Kaathryn Bohnoff to offer what is essentially Coruscant Nights IV, even though it is not titled as such. Kudos to Del Rey for allowing this story to continue.

Darth Vader's fate at the end of Coruscant Nights III was unclear to Jax Pavan, although we as readers know he is certainly still kicking around. Jax has been continuing to work with Whiplash and his allies from the first three books: notably, Sullustan journalist Den Dhur, the remarkably self-aware droid I-Five, and his Twi'lek partner Laranth are all still at Jax's side as the book begins. It's compelling how Mr. Reaves has managed to bring elements of his prequel-era stories forward through his many novels: for example, the bota from the Medstar duology playing a role in Patterns of Force and the shifty Sakiyan Tuden Sal, first encountered in Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, now leading Whiplash. The story of the Pavan family and I-Five, along with their contemporaries, has become quite its own sideshow in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. I-Five in particular has had a fascinating journey through his decades of existence and in this book his growing self-awareness hits new heights.

The Last Jedi finally reveals the secrets from the Sith holocron which debuted in the Maul novel. I always get uncomfortable when the concept of non-linear time is introduced in a Star Wars novel, as kicking open the door to time travel will invalidate all existing stories, including the films themselves. Flow-walking in Legacy of the Force and the Dark Nest trilogy trod dangerously close to stepping over that line. In The Last Jedi, the authors have cameos from a Cephalon who can perceive time in a non-linear, broadly encompassing fashion, but the Cephalon's statements are so cryptic that characters are generally unable to use the information effectively. More intriguingly, the holocron contains a secret to bending time within it. Again, I wasn't sure that was something I wanted to see introduced in a Star Wars story, but it is rendered in a clever way and also made irrelevant by the end of the story. The interesting impact the time-bending had on the climactic battle justified the authors playing around with this concept: no harm done to the universe storyline as a whole.

The book hops around the galaxy in true Star Wars fashion, including stops at familiar worlds Mandalore and Dathomir (Dathomir seems to be undergoing quite the EU resurgence since playing a prominent role in the Clone Wars TV show). A Whiplash plot to remove Emperor Palpatine from power also brings Coruscant back into the picture. The early days of the Empire are a fascinating period, one still rife with storytelling opportunity, and so it's enjoyable when The Last Jedi follows the efforts of Whiplash to take out the Empire's head even when Pavan and his friends are not in the scenes. The tension between the Whiplash leaders, in particular Tuden Sal and police prefect Pol Haus, is well-illustrated and makes them much more interesting than they would be if they were all in perfect alignment on their goals. The period where the Emperor is consolidating power, Vader is brand-new on the job, and the galaxy is stabilizing after the Clone Wars is one in which I imagine people would be very confused about their future direction and choices, and the authors portray this well with the splintered leadership of Whiplash.

The Last Jedi could be read as a standalone novel and the lack of linkage on the cover to the earlier series (beyond pictures of the three Coruscant Nights books) indicates that Del Rey is comfortable marketing it that way. However, I recommend starting with Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, moving on to the Medstar duology, and then reading the Coruscant Nights trilogy before tackling The Last Jedi. The story connections and character development spanning these seven novels make for an entertaining micro-saga in the larger story of the galaxy far, far away.

The Last Jedi is kind of interesting. It's a sequel, of sorts, to the Coruscant Nights trilogy (which I loved), but tells a story somewhat separate from those. I enjoyed the book on the whole, but knowing all of the other things surrounding it (like the fact that the's far from the Last Jedi) seems to take a bit of the tension out of it.

It was very neat seeing their plan come together however, as well as seeing the new acolytes that Darth Vader has at his command. I'm just hoping they do something more with this character in future books. I'd love to see what happens to him by the Original Trilogy Era.

The story is essentially a rescue mission, and it doesn't veer much from that. The characterization played through fairly well, and the author did a great job showing the character's feelings and thought-process behind the possibility of him being the last Jedi left in the galaxy. It could have easily become melodramatic and cliche, but they managed to keep it interesting and engaging.

Ethnographer in training Review

Over all, the book is well laid out, and the information is quite accessible. Example numbers and graphics set off the numerous case studies. Key points are given in italics and indicated with a graphic in the margin, where the reader will also find critical definitions and cross-references to chapters in other volumes in the series.
This volume provides good introductory material on ethnographic fieldwork techniques. The methods are not given in isolation, but in relationship to theoretical models, and in terms of how operationalization may be done. Methodology is presented as coming directly from a theory, and feeding directly back into a modification of that theory, whatever that theory happens to be. The authors also clearly present the need for making observations operationalizable, allowing for observations to fit into a quantitative analysis that reflects the reality observed in a manner that is valid and reliable.
Before moving to a direct discussion of the techniques, the authors give some needed practical information on getting to the field to do the research (chapter 4). This teaches the student how to avoid another common pitfall: having the technical tools to do the fieldwork, but not being able to get to the field or to survive there long enough to do the research.
The next 140 pages of the book (chapters 5 to 9) give the basics of several types of ethnographic methodology: exploratory or open-ended observation; in-depth, open-ended interviewing; semistructured interviewing; structured ethnographic data collection (ethnographic surveys); and using archival and secondary data.
The book finishes with two chapters (10 and 11), one on sampling, and the final one on validity and reliability. The volume ends with five full pages of references, and an eight-page index, which is subcategorized for easy reference.

The Catholic literary heritage

I have to admit that I am totally shocked that this wonderful book has yet to be reviewed, since it is just that good! I first used this as a high school student in theology class and have returned to many times. It is a very readable overview of famous or influential (not always the same) texts from the Roman Catholic heritage that an educated Catholic should have at least a passing familiarity.

Ten writers are featured, including the biographical context of their writing. They include: Augustine's Confessions, Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy, Bede's Ecclesiastical History, Aquinas' Summa Theologica, Dante's Divine Comedy, Pascal's Pens�es, Thomas � Kempis' Imitation f Christ, Newman's Apologia Pro Vita Sua, Chesterton's Orthodoxy and Merton's Seven Storey Mountain. Coming in at only 167 pages, this is an ideal book for college or high school courses or just anyone interested in the literary heritage of the Catholic faith.

A funny story about my own copy of this book is that I had loaned it out to a friend who liked the idea of reading more than the act of reading itself. As such things go, my friend moved away without returning it. I had forgotten about it until about eight years later when I was in the bowels of a college store's "book basement" that rarely sees the light of day, probably looking for some Latin works or a Cold War political science book for old times' sake. As it happened, I look down and on the shelf is a book's spine that looked familiar. I remembered that I used to own a copy of it and thought that I should buy another to replace it. I skimmed through the pages and found the marginalia strangely familiar. I couldn't believe it. It was my old book! My friend had sold it before he moved and there I was years later holding it and having to buy it back. Someone once asked C.S. Lewis if there would be books in heaven. He replied, "Only the ones that were never returned."

Another powerful book that also happens to recommend this one is Another Sort of Learning by Schall. You would love to read it if you have any interest in the power of books upon the formation of the inner and outer life.

Great read about some great people.

Highlight of some wonderful saints. Denesh D'Sousa does a great job. It will bring you closer to appreciating all of his work in spite of the Obama Administration's horrible focus to try to take him down.

A Powerful Document.

"Chile: The Other September 11" is one of the best books available on the tragic events that inaugurated an era of terror and fascism in the small Latin American country. This is an astounding document of what took place when radical right-wing general Augusto Pinochet lead a CIA-backed military coup against the government of ELECTED socialist president Salvador Allende. The most powerful statement the book makes is that now both Chile and the United States share the dreaded date of a Tuesday, September 11 as a day of horror and death, this is eloquently expressed in a memorable essay by Ariel Dorfman. In-between the chapters and in an important chronology the Nixon White House plot to distabalize Allende's government is detailed, showing how the U.S. in part was deeply responsible for the coup and horrors that fell on Chile. Some right-wingers here cringe, trying to make the book sound "one-sided," maybe it is, but the facts sure aren't. It is also ridiculous that some reviewers here try to discount the brilliant speech given by Fidel Castro shortly after the coup. Castro is a revolutionary leader, something hard to grasp through American eyes eventhough now sadly, we can grasp a taste of what Chile experienced with our own day of terrorism and murder. Castro's speech is both a memorable tribute to the Chilean spirit, the Chilean revolution, Allende, and the solidarity between Cuba and Chile, and yet Castro still gives a well-calculated warning about unarmed nations being defenseless against the tyranny of fascist intentions. The book also features some wonderful poetry that expresses the FEELINGS of what happened, this is an insightful style for the book considering Chile is the home of one of the world's great poets, Pablo Neruda, who's sad fate following the coup is detailed here by his wife. The two most powerful chapters belong to Joan Jara, wife of murdered Chilean folk singer Victor Jara, she writes about her final moments with her husband on the morning of the coup as they held each-other for the last time before he leaves for the city's university, never to be seen again except as a bloodied, murdered victim of the military rulers. Jara also shares here her husband's final poem, written while imprisoned in a horrific sports stadium turned torture center. "Chile: The Other September 11" should not be read by just Latin Americans or history buffs, it should be read by Americans not just as a look into what we've helped unleash on other nations, but as a warning of what we shouldn't allow to happen here. It is easy to dismiss the crimes of men like Pinochet as something from "over there," when in fact, it can happen here because human beings are human beings no matter where they reside. When we hear about "the war on terror" and some of the frightening stereotypes being developed around immigrants and others, it would be wise to read this book and see what happens when ideaological paranoia produces a state of terror and oppression. Chile politically has emerged from the darkness of the Pinochet regime, Michelle Bachelet is now the nation's first woman president (and head of Chile's socialist party), but reading this book, one realizes there are national scars that take longer time to heal. "Chile: The Other September 11" is a book that refuses to be ignored and shouldn't be ignored, it is a look at the past, and a document that helps better understand the present.

very emotive read

I was growing up under the regime of a series of military dictators.Violence was pervasive and even covetous act .As a naturally result of that, every town and community there are at least one or two who dissapeared for a while and returned with black marks all over their bodies. I heard so much horror stories about arrest, interrogation and of course torture. It's a regime imbued its citizens with social-darwinism, male chauvinism, excessive violence, and so-called Military virtue. For an imbicile American who left scathing review on this book, these are no other than stories from remote third world countries and only possible under COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP. No brother!

my childhood experience probably led me to have a symphathy and emotional cameraderie to Chilean people who suffered so much under the authorative regime of Augusto Pinochet( By the way, it's third class comic opera . When Park Chung Hee was assasinated by one of his own henchmen, Pinochet , who admired Park so much, seriously considered to order entire chile to hoist half-staff . Yeah Dictators also have heartwrenching cameraderie!!)Probably , I am not brave enough to look at my country's history without shuddering .Reading about Chile might be a contingency experience for a coward like me.

This book is consisted of first person anecdotes written by those who lost their loved ones during the septerber 11 1973 and subsequent repression that cost more than 3000 lives. The book's poignant title means more than mere title . It show how the destiny of common people of two countries forever entwined by tragedies happened coincidently on September 11. As the editor of the book wrote these tragedies forever rob people of U.S and Chile the innocent look at their surrounding and the world.
This work is not history book. There are scarcely any detailed information of CIA covert operation and involvement.Nor are there any depth of information over the U.S corporate interest and the electoral victory of Salvador Allende.
yet, this is a valuable historical evidence. Why? Because it's a book comprised of real people who provide their personal tragedy without any political agenda. yeah, Fidel Castro's piece are polemical and the work of demagogue.But, even his works contains enough honesty that show his personal symphasy to the destiny of Chilean people and especially President Allende. I was especially moved by Joan Jara's piece . It's a deeply moving book. Anyone want to know about the tragedy of Chile should read the book.

To be read slowly... and again

There are history books that one feels a rush to finish, to learn more, to devour. This book demands to be read slowly. carefully. To feel the words. Not only to understand them intellectually but to feel them in your spirit.
Read the last words of Salvador Allende before La Moneda Palace was bombed. and then read them again.
"It is possible they will smash us," Allenda said "but tomorrow belongs to the people."
Tomorrow belongs to the people.
Read Joan Jara talk about the week her husband Victor was arrested and tortured, and how she later found him.
and read Victor's last poem.
and read Ariel Dorfman talk about how the U.S. September 11th reminded him of the Chilean September 11th.
and read all of this while remembering that the military coup in Chile, the mass killings that followed, the repression and disappearances, the rise of Augusto Pinochet, was all with the support of Nixon and Kissinger.
and then read it all again.
