Brandon Sanderson grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska. He lives in Utah with his wife and children and teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University. My husband and I were trying to figure out something we could do together for fun at home besides watch tv now that we have a baby and it's hard to get out. We've only read the first book so far, but have loved it! If you're worried about reading something clean I think there are like 2 swear words the whole book, servants get raped, but it doesn't go into detail, just implied and not to any main characters. We have had some good laughs and enjoy the characters. Sometimes we feel that fantasy characters can be kind of dull, predictable, or not have any dynamic but we have enjoyed these ones. There is a bit more wit than I have read in others as well which I enjoy. This copy of the book is just a small paperback so it's going to be left with the cover curled when you're finished, but that doesn't bother me

new fan of Sanderson, after Gathering Storm

I am a new fan of Brandon Sanderson; I never heard of him until I read book 12 from WOT, the Gathering Storm. After that book, I just had to go find out more about this author. I enjoyed his writing style in the Gathering Storm; it was very engaging. Then, I read Elantris, and really enjoyed it as well. After that book, I found out about Mistborn. I picked up this trilogy and I was hooked!
It is hard for me, in retrospect, to believe how good this series was, especially considering how fast Sanderson writes (how many large books ~700pg can one man write in one year??). To me, this is one of my favorite fantasy series I've read. And I hadn't heard of him two months ago! This series has something for everyone: a well developed and very well thought out, and original, magic system; the characters are complex and have different personalities; the story line itself is epic and gives scope to everything hanging in the balance; there is romance, lots of action; it was honestly hard to do anything else in my spare time while I was reading this series...
Some of the traps other fantasy authors tend to fall into -- dragging out climactic events over too many books -- did not plague this series. This trilogy was very well put together and the events were obviously preplanned. I have to give him credit because he did not shy away from not only killing off major characters, but he also had a powerful conclusion to each book. I kept waiting to be let down, but never was. This book series is quite tremendous. It should be a model for how to write a fantasy series.

Best fantasy series I've read in too long

First off: Ignore the cover art. It's awful and inaccurate. Looks like some silly fantasy harlequin romance, and it depicts the hero doing things that not only did she not do in the book, but according to the supernatural powers rules laid out in this particular secondary creation world of Brandon Sanderson's, she WOULD not have done. I originally purchased the trilogy on Kindle, which has a much better cover image.
I then bought two sets of the physical book trilogies, one for my best friend, and one so that I could go back and read the whole thing again, but with easy flip-ability to maps and previous pages, because that's something you'll want to do. There is a Shyamalayan-esque twist to his stories that, like Sixth Sense, made me want to go back and experience the whole thing again, now knowing what was revealed at the end.
I recommended this trilogy to my mother, best friend, boyfriend, and 4 coworkers so far, and am happy to spread the word more! Also, let's all get behind this series so the movie option finally gets picked up, because that would make for some awesome, never before seen types of special effects!
The world is insanely well thought out, the author's brain humbles me with it's imagination. This author introduces new creatures that aren't even remotely like any of your familiar fantasy dragons, trolls, what-have-you; they are all his own and amazing.
I'm all over the place with this review, because I have so many good things to say about it, but don't want to say anything about content. Just read it. I have series commitment issues myself, so feel free to just read the first one. Though he leaves a lot open for more books at the end of all his stories, he does at least tie up the main plot conflict very neatly at the end of each as well, so you do get a sense of closure. But trust me, by then you WILL want to read more.
