Read Both Volumes

There is some confusion - there was for me anyway - about the second volume in this novel. It is as if the book was split in the middle and made into two volumes. Reading the first volume is like reading half a book.
If you don't know much about South Africa you will after reading this book. In the typical style of Michener, he weaves fiction with fact to present a fine picture of this part of the world.
The entire book (both volumes) is more than 1100 pages, lengthy by today's standards. Book length stops some from reading a novel. I don't know why. These rushed people are missing some of the best books ever written.

Vol 2 Is a worthy sequel to Vol 1. Vintage Michener. A great source of detailed, unbiased, and insightful history of South Africa which captures the humanity, nobility, hubris, and the horrors of human endeavor. Understandably not as epic or with the scope of his novel The Source, but a grand work.

Nice simple layout and good selection of phrases, including some not in my other phrasebooks. Sadly, though, quite a few are wrong. For example, in the phrases "It's hot, isn't it?"and "Cold, isn't?" the words dingin and panas are reversed.

This is an excellent overview of the development aspects for national development. Although not full colour, it is profusely illustrated with two-colour diagrams and charts. There is an emphasis upon Africa, appropriately in my view because that is where many development "experiments " were imposed upon the communities there.

A little dark and explicit menage but great story

On another world with separate, independent kingdoms King Kritan of Katarius finds himself captured and enslaved while trying to locate his long estranged brother in the enemy kingdom of Tamonius. He is sold to the House of Argyros and meets Surina, senator’s daughter, virgin, and his true mate. Her personal guard Rawlin is not happy as he has an agreement with her father to marry her if anything should happen to her father and he means to affirm it. Of course the worst happens and the entire house is in danger, to protect all she loves Surina agrees to participate in a spell involving a threesome with herself, Rawlin, and her now husband Kritan; it works and the house and occupants are protected for the next month while Kritan returns with Surina to his kingdom. Good story line and great characters looking forward to further installments!

This book takes place on the planet Panucia. The Planet is divided into at least four realms: Katarius(shifters), Tamonius, Vamone, and the Valley of the Dead.

Our hero is Kritan, King of Katarius. He is now wandering through a cess pit of a street and neighborhood where anything can be bought or sold, or killed for pittance. Kritan is more than disgusted by what he see and smells. Yes, there is crime in his own lands of Katarius, but they are mild infractions compared to what he is seeing in the city of Vespa, Tamonius..

He is looking for a particular tavern. He needs to find a contact there. One who can led him to his younger brother. Even though he is king in in his own land, this is one mission that he must do, in person. He owes an apology to his younger brother. Years ago they fought over the lies spread by a jealous, spiteful woman. In anger he banished his brother from his realm. He has come to try to make amends, and he must do so himself. But the information leads him into a trap. He is surrounded and captured and sold into slavery.

Luckily, he is purchased by House of Argyros. Although they too, pit the strength of their slaves against those of other houses, on Argyros, they are well-fed, trained, medically treated if necessary.

Surina, the well-pampered, if cloistered, daughter of the home sat a reading an erotic animated scroll, she heard a loud altercation and went to investigate. She found Daisin a cruel minor overlord beating a new slave. His cruelty to both slaves and free servants was abhorrent. She dashed through the shrubbery to see the commotion and found a naked man on his knees being severely whipped by Daisin. A strange jolt of yearning raced through her. She asked what the slave had done to merit the severe whipping. He refused to wear the silver slave collar. Surina knew more than most about the Katarius shape-sifters. Silver could weaken and kill them. It acted like a poison.

Kritan, and his 'animal' recognize' her as theirs. A single touch and he recognizes her as his future queen.
Surina noticed his left arm, a kind of life history in brief. Kritan said when one finds and claims a life mate, it appears on the right arm. "Mine speak of me being a warrior".

Kritan winds up alone in the medical tent, and Surina soon comes along.

Oh NO! I am not going to fill you in on all the juicy details, and there are lots of them. It's a lot more fun to read and laugh about the adventures anyway, so go get this book.

As usual Mandy Roth, writing here as Reagan Hawk, pens another tightly-worded, quick paced adventure. This story is filled with erotic episodes, villains, danger, laughter, magick, and more than a few mysteries to sort out in future episodes. There is love, the return of her father and Kritan's brother, Jaelyn , and of course this is a romance so it has a HAE!! I certainly hope that Jaelyn and Rawlin get their HEA's too. hint...hint.

Another creative spellbinding world created by Reagan Hawk (Mandy Roth) A King's Ransom is a great beginning to this series. A futuristic scify erotic romance adventure, the story takes place in the future that has turned its back on technology (other than magic, paranormal shifters and Space travel) and feels more like Ancient Rome.
King Kritan is in search of his long lost brother Jaelin, wandering thru a barbaric primitive dangerous city. He is double crossed and finds himself a slave to a rich man who's captures have no idea he is a King. While being punished by a cruel guard the daughter of the estates owner, Surina, comes to his rescue. Despite the protests of her own personal guard (Rawlin), she takes Kritan under her protection.
Sheltered from the outside world Surnina has grown up somewhat nieve, remains a virgin in her early twenties yet has been intrigued by forbidden erotic scrolls she must sneak viewing.
Kritan recognizes Surina as her mate and is immediately protective and attracted to about her as she is to him. Their relationship builds emotionally and sexually supplying many hot erotic scenes to fill any scify romantic paranormal book lovers wishes.
Surina's world is primitive, corrupt almost like Sodom and Gemorrah,and enemies with Kritans planet. Realizing there must be immediate changes to their world there is an underground movement headed by Surina's father and Kritans brother Jaelin.
The story has lots of surprising twists and turns and holds your interest the whole time, including a few shocking situations (M/FM. It is a bit confusing in the beginning and the past histories of the characters and their worlds is not really developed deeply.
There is enough plenty of good exciting, suspense story, hot romantica and swoon worthy secondary characters (Rawlin and Jaelin) to have you wanting to finish the book In o e sitting.The detailed plot and overall background storylines make this well worth the read and has me looking forward to sequels including Raelin and Jaelins stories.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF THIS BOOK

The study of human development over the life span reveals the fascinating story of human beings and how they change over time. The story is both universal and uniquely personal, because it speaks to us about ourselves and the people who are important to us in our lives. Besides being intrinsically interesting, knowledge about development has obvious relevance for professionals engaged in counseling, social work, and other helping fields. We believe that in order to understand our clients and the nature of their problems, we must see clients in context. One important context is clients' developmental history. As helping professionals, we must take into account the threads of continuity and change in people's lives that bring them to their present point in development. This text provides the background and the tools to enable professionals to view their clients from a developmental perspective.

This text also reflects the contemporary view that life span development is a process deeply embedded within and inseparable from the context of family, social network, and culture. People do not progress through life in isolation; rather their developmental course influences and is influenced by other people and systems. Some of these influences are related to the cultural differences that exist in a world of increasing diversity. We recognize the importance of these factors in understanding human development and emphasize cultural and systemic influences on human growth and change throughout the book.

Knowledge about development increases every day, making it exceptionally difficult to summarize this dynamic field. Presumably, every author needs to make some choices about what to include in a book of this nature. This particular text is configured to emphasize selected theories and research that have useful applications for helping professionals. The main purpose of this book is to provide students in the helping professions with information that can be translated into professional "best practice" applications.

Throughout this text, we also emphasize the role of clinicians as reflective practitioners. Reflective practice involves "active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusions to which it leads" (Dewey, 1933/1998, p. 9). Our primary vehicle for accomplishing this goal is twofold: (1) encouraging the reader to reflect on personal experience and assumptions about development and (2) communicating the value of research-based knowledge as a means of understanding human development. Our particular orientation intentionally emphasizes the significance of developmental research to the work of the professional helper. We attempt to integrate various lines of developmental research into a useful whole that has practical value for helpers in applied settings. In so doing, this book bears witness to the enormous amount of work done by developmental researchers, particularly in the last several decades. Without their groundbreaking efforts, clinicians' own work to improve people's lives would be greatly impoverished. It has been a challenge and an honor to record their contributions in this book.

COVERAGE AND ORGANIZATION

The opening chapters establish the theme of the text and introduce broad issues in development. Chapter 1 begins with an examination of the role of developmental knowledge in reflective practice. Students are introduced to theoretical models and issues that appear and reappear throughout the text. They are encouraged to reflect on their own theoretical assumptions about development and on the impact those assumptions could have in clinical practice. Boxed features help students understand how developmental processes are studied scientifically and how scientifically established information can be useful in practice. Chapter 2 takes a close look at the role of genetics in behavioral development, describing basic hereditary mechanisms by which any genetic influences must operate and examining alternative scientific strategies for assessing the contribution of genetics to behavior. Aspects of prenatal development and the multiple influences on aprenatal development are also considered.

The remaining chapters follow a chronological sequence, covering a full range of critical topics in physical, cognitive, and social development. In Chapters 3 through 5, the infancy and preschool periods are the focus. Among the topics covered are early brain development and many aspects of early cognitive growth, such as the development of representational thought and memory, children's early "theory of mind" or naive psychology, the early understanding of symbols and of language, and more. Coverage of early social development includes the emergence of emotions, emotion regulation, attachment processes, early self-development, temperament, and the role of parental disciplinary style in the growth of self-regulation. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 examine important developments in middle childhood and in the transition to adolescence, including the growth of logical thinking, the expanding capacity to process and remember information, perspective-taking skills and friendship development, influences on the developing self-concept, developments in moral thinking, influences on the emergence of prosocial and antisocial behavior, sex-role development, and peer relationships. Adolescence is the subject of Chapters 9 and 10, covering pubertal change, advances in logical and metacognitive skill, identity development, and the influences of peers, parents, school, and culture on adolescent behavior. Chapters 11 and 12 describe the young adult period, or what has been called "emerging adulthood," and includes a close look at the way thinking changes as adulthood looms and at the progress of work and career and of intimate relationships. Chapters 13 and 14 are focused on changes in physical, cognitive, and social functioning during middle and late adulthood, respectively. These chapters examine the many kinds of change that adults experience and the maintenance of well-being in the face of loss. Among the key developmental tasks discussed are marriage and its discontents, the experience of child rearing, the role of wisdom, stereotypes about aging, coping with death and bereavement, and many more.

NOTE: Look more carefully as the books in Hard Cover and Paper Back items are different. I ordered thinking that I am ordering a text book, but received a workbook (from paperback tab).
