Liturgy is Cool

A few years ago I might have been skeptical or leery about something like this... I was talking to one of my friends a while back and she was telling me how she had taken her son to the park to play and she observed a nun who was praying "while reading from a book." She told me that it "just looked so unnatural, why don't you just pray freely and openly and come before God as yourself - using your own words?"

And I would imagine a lot of people might feel that way.

But the liturgy of the hours is more than just praying traditional prayers or praying through scripture, it's about getting into a rhythm of prayer. When you pray the divine hours you are allowing the prayers to govern your time instead of just praying "whenever you feel like it."

Plus, praying through scripture has been happening since long before Christ. In fact, we know that even Christ prayed the scriptures. From the cross Jesus prays, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Which is a direct quote from Psalm 22. Praying or quoting the first line of a scriptural text was a way of "referencing" the entire passage. It was a way of saying, "I feel like this" or "remember this and what this teaches?"

And last, though praying the hours might feel like its weighted heavily in church tradition, well....that's because it is. And I think that's one of the bigger sellers for me.

I was reading somewhere about how the designers at Volkswagen decided to re-release the Beetle. And surprisingly enough it came about as a knee jerk reaction to the boom of the internet and the quick rise of technology. It seems that as each new year came and left, more and more people felt they were being thrust faster into the future. So designers and inventors started to see a rising trend in people gravitating towards things from the past. Suddenly "retro" was extremely in. So when Volkswagen was trying to come up with an idea for a new compact car in 1998, they decided to redesign the Beetle. One year later it was named "Import Car of the Year" by Motor Trend.

Not surprisingly we are seeing this same movement in the younger church. As modern church tried to make the Sunday service streamlined and more like going to the mall. Young hipsters started to move more towards all things traditional. As big mega churches began stripping away all forms of iconography, stained glass windows and pretty much anything that looked "church-like," young people began frequenting churches that not only "felt" like church, but "looked" like church as well.

Believe it or not... liturgy is cool.

So going back to me... this Christmas, to help me get back into a season of quiet time, I picked up Phyllis Tickle's Christmastide. This was a great tool to help me go through the weeks of advent and epiphany using scripture, hymns, poems and the traditional readings of the "retro church." For those of you who already own Phyllis' Winter Liturgy of the Hours, you don't need to pick this up as the readings are the same.

Great Book

The Christmastide book is the perfect book to use for those who are starting to learn about the Liturgy of the Hours. We used this book at my parish throughout the Advent Season before weekday morning mass. We have since adapted to the regular morning prayer, but this book is a great way to start before going to the full version. I would recommend this book to anyone! The only con is the small print.

disappointing in Kindle format

I was extremely disappointed in the Kindle format of this book. It has almost no table of contents, and the different days for prayers are not numbered, delineated by weekday, or anything. For example, you cannot look for "First week of advent", or "Monday" or anything like that. There are just a bunch of prayers run together in sequence: morning, daytime, evening, morning, daytime, evening. How can anyone find the prayer for the right day of advent when there are no date markings or references of any kind? In contrast to the Pocket Edition of the Divine Hours, by the same author which has beautiful formatting and is easy to use, this book is totally unusable.

Reading this book by Steve Scott is exactly what I wanted - no fluff, actionable content, and a step-by-step plan for building and growing a blog that is read by the masses. One year blogger. 400 subscribers. Needed help! It's all right here.

I've been blogging for a year. I have 400 subscribers. After breaking the one year mark and having so few subscribers, I decided it was time I found out why. Steve Scott's book was recommended to me because he's generated actual results and provides a step-by-step formula. Based upon what he says, I feel like I should probably just start over! My goodness! I've done only a handful of what he teaches. NO WONDER MY BLOG TRAFFIC SUCKS! Clearly I have a lot of work to do. At least now I know what to do! First order of business: Guest blogging. As part of that, earlier today I did a radio appearance to promote one of my books. I have so much more work that needs to be done. Here's my GREAT news. I was so discouraged after a year of blogging to a slowly growing list that I was thinking of quitting. Now that I can see what to do, I see that rather than give it up, I need to invest the time to do it right. In the next year, I could have 100,000 subscribers. Even if I only get a tenth of those results, that's STILL 25 times what I have now! Highly recommended.

Full disclosure: I know Scott from his blog and I really appreciate his approach to online business that flies in the face of "gurus" who would charge you an arm and leg for half-assed advice. I also have to say I'm not a complete beginner in the internet marketing space.

My first thought after reading this book: "If only I'd had a resource like that when I was starting out in February this year". Scott puts together heaps of information but keeps it palatable. It's packed with information you can take and run. Importantly, it's not really one of these "get rich quick schemes". It's actually the opposite. And I like that because, quite instinctively, I've gone down this road too.

Scott talks about creating lasting value with your website. He talks about working hard and being patient with results. But most importantly, he shows tools. Plenty of them, in an easy-to-understand sequence you can apply to your blog, whether you have it already or keep dreaming of one.

Great for learning Silo

If you really want to learn the program Silo, this book will have you covered. It is rated for the Novice to Intermediate and that is what the book is for, though a beginner or expert may be able to use the book as the basis for learning Silo's features, the project would be a bit much for the beginner and probably bore an expert level user.

The book's layout is excellent and there are plenty of pictures. Most the of the images, and they're referenced often, lack enough contrast to allow you to actually see what the authors are talking about. However, you can download the models on a chapter by chapter basis if you really need to visually confirm how something was done. There is also a Bonus chapter on UV Mapping that is a must download.

I'm not someone who feels they need to model everything from scratch and only model when I simply cannot find what I'm looking for or need something special and got the book to get a better grasp of some of the more advanced features of Silo (Displacement Painting, etc.) So for me, I found the book to be an excellent purchase from Amazon.

The Author of this book really didn't do a good job of making it. It started out okay, but then it just went down hill the further I read it and did what it said, especially when it came to creating the girl. A lot of the things it told me to do didn't work out for me. I pretty much had to look for other ways for accomplishing something. Also, the spelling and grammar of the book is not good. I saw misspelled words and fragmented sentences it. The author also got some of the commands in Silo wrong. In some instances, he called a command of one function for another function, if you know what I mean. The illustrations in the book aren't good either. I'm a visual learner, which means I have to see what's going in order to accomplish something. But the pictures in the book aren't very clear. Even with a magnifying glass, I had a hard time making out what was being accomplished in the illustrations. Because of that, I ended up messing up in some areas and had to start over again. Furthermore, the author's modeling techniques aren't good either. I think there are many mistakes in the way he models the girl. I believe I can come up with better ways than what he can. Besides all that, he didn't complete everything. On the cover of the book, it shows the girl with her mouth open and showing her teeth. But he didn't show how to create the teeth or other insides of her mouth, such as the tongue and roof of the mouth. Anyways, I had such a hard time modeling the girl through this book that I just abandoned the project and deleted everything. The only good thing about this book is that it taught me how to use Silo and got me exposed to organic 3D modeling. I don't believe I will be using Silo again since I found other 3D modeling software that pretty much behaves the same way as Silo and then some. This book might be good for introducing a software and getting someone exposed to 3D modeling, but it is not a good modeling book. The cons outweigh the pros in this book, therefore it's pretty much a waste of money.

Kindle Edition is Terrible

This review relates to the Kindle edition of this book. I have no idea if it is relevant to the print edition.

I ordered the kindle edition of the book because I wanted to be able to have it open on one monitor while I followed along, doing the project on my other monitor.

If you are going to follow along and actually do the project, you are going to be continually referring to illustrations. And the illustrations in the Kindle edition of this book are worse than worthless. On my iPad (full-size, not mini), they are unclear. On my 23 inch monitor, they are equally unclear.

I am only a short way into the project, and I have already reacquainted myself with the rich variety of profanity available in the English language.

I have decided to read the book and learn what I can, but I'm giving up on the project.

There's no excuse for providing such poor illustrations in a Kindle book that costs almost $40. Fortunately, I rented the book, so I'm only out $15, but even that is too much.

I really want to learn Silo, and I wish very much that this book had been helpful. There are a lot of good reviews for this book, so perhaps the print edition is better.

More coming-of-age fiction with very little romance

I rarely ever give one stars because I'm pretty careful about what I select to read. But the blurb does not accurately depict the nature of the story, and the story is riddled with various issues, two specifically that deal with the content. A more thorough review with details is posted on my blog. This is a condensed version.

This started out as an engaging story that had a lot of potential; I was intrigued by Adaley and Ryle’s opening story and was pulled in right from the start. But unfortunately as the chapters progressed my star rating continued to go down. Issue after issue crept up. And there really needs to be a reader warning with this story. There's no indication of dark themes and there really should be because ****spoiler alert*** this book does NOT have an HEA (major character death) and does not depict an exclusive relationship.

Even if those two major items aren't deal breakers for you, there's plenty of other issues. The narration seems to suffer an identity crisis, switching back and forth from first person POV (Adaley) to third person to describe Ryle. Why Ryle’s “sections” aren’t in first person from his perspective, I could never figure out. The third person narration in those parts made me feel disconnected to Ryle, were sometimes just creepy the way it described things—like a stalker observing the action; and had numerous grammatical errors with tense. One sentence was present, the next past.

I could never quite identify if this story was meant to be young adult or new adult. While it frequently addressed mature themes and the characters were over 18, any romantic encounters were either watered down or “fade away” scenes. It probably would have been better to have embraced the “new adult” audience who have more life experience as I personally wouldn’t want any “young adults” coming away with some of the messages in this story.

As far as genre goes, this is probably more of a coming-of-age story with some romance mixed in than it is a full-fledged romance. The message the story seems to convey is that there’s no triumph in the face of adversity, but dreams are still supposed to be obtainable. How, after what happens with the characters, I have no clue.

Other problems that plagued the reading were as follows:

There were shadows of continuity errors in various places, and I could never get a feel for the age/year of some of the characters. Adaley talks of how she “transferred” but it’s established as Fall and the start of her freshman year. Adaley arrives as the “new girl” with everyone else seemingly already knowing each other and their way around campus as if they’ve been there already so it felt like everyone else had to be at least sophomores, though I’m not sure they were supposed to be.

Both Adaley and Ryle come off preachy at times. Their combined attitudes (somewhat narrow minded views) of sexuality and substance abuse didn’t endear me to their characters. The word “butch” is thrown around far too much, mostly at places that seemed out of context on top of everything else.

Multiple times in the story a girl’s virginity is referred to as a “gift” to give a man. That didn’t exactly sit well with my feminist side.

Enjoyment of this book will depend a lot on what you are looking for as well as your definitions of a romance. Readers requiring an exclusive relationship and the characters alive at the end will want to pass on this one.

A book will the all emotions!

This is the first book I've read by this author and I really enjoyed it. It was a cute, sweet read. I laughed, I cried, I felt joy and I felt sorrow.

Adaley was always the good girl so when she goes off to college, she was determined to be a little wild, a little reckless. While reading, I could see a little of myself in Adaley at that age. It was a little reminiscent.

Ryle was so mysterious to me. I was constantly asking myself why is he doing this and while is he acting this way. It kept me want to know more and more about him. I really loved the secondary characters, Tank and Zoe. Those two were hilarious and I hope to read more about them in the future.

Gah!!! The ending!!! It wasn't the ending I was hoping for but I can't fault the book for that. Even after having finished the book, I am still thinking about it so mission accomplished! The book had such a fantastic message of following your dream and never give up.

I really enjoyed the storyline. I kept wanting to know more about all the characters and it was entertaining. It switched character POV through the story but sometimes got confusing with the transitions, or lack there of, between characters. I would put this book in between YA and NA. There wasn't anything to heavy as far as sex goes. I did find some of the dialogue to be a little immature, but these are also 18-19 year olds so it kind of fits. If you are looking for a cute and funny read with a good message I would recommend this book.

This book was just not for me. Adaley is probably the most annoying character I have read in awhile. I found her more annoying that most characters in the new adult genre. Everything about her was so cliche it was hard to read. And Ryle was pretty unlikable. He had that whole mysterious thing going on, but not in a way that made me want to know more about him. I had to give up on the book at 25%. I just couldn't take it. I hate giving up on a book.
Now, all of that being said, others might love this book and not find Adaley annoying-thats just my personal feelings. There is nothing wrong with the actual writing of the book/plot/etc so my dislikes are all personal and might not bother you at all.

I absolutely love HP but was not impressed with these books

These books are extremely short, I read the entire set in less than 45 minutes. I absolutely love HP but was not impressed with these books. The pictures repeat in the books and the pictures are all mixed up, not in chronological order like the books attempt to be in. Nice enough but not really worth the money.

Got these for my daughter for Christmas. She is just getting into Harry Potter and these were great guide to give you background on each character. My husband and I read them too. Love them!!
