About the Author
Sanford Friedenthal is an MBSE Consultant. He has been an advocate for model-based systems engineering and a leader of the industry team that developed SysML from its inception through its adoption by the OMG.

Alan Moore is an Architecture Modeling Specialist at The MathWorks. He has extensive experience in the development of real-time and object-oriented methodologies and their application. Alan was co-chair of the OMG's Real-time Analysis and Design Working Group and served as the language architect during the development of SysML.

Rick Steiner is an independent consultant focusing on pragmatic application of systems engineering modeling techniques. He culminated his 29 year career at Raytheon as an Engineering Fellow, Raytheon Certified Architect and INCOSE Expert Systems Engineering Professional (ESEP).

Mr. Steiner has been an advocate, consultant, and instructor of model driven systems development for over 20 years. He has served as chief engineer, architect, or lead system modeler for several large scale electronics programs, incorporating the practical application of the OOSEM methodology and generation of Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) artifacts from complex system models.

Mr. Steiner has been a key contributor to both the original requirements for SysML and the development of SysML specification. While his main technical contribution has been in the area of allocations, requirements, and the sample problem, Mr. Steiner has also served as co-chair of the SysML Revision Task Force (RTF). He continues to provide frequent tutorials and workshops on SysML and model driven engineering topics at INCOSE events, NDIA conferences, and other corporate engagements.

Helpful book on a worthy subject

This was a well-written and informative book. I'm very comfortable with the UML, which has a large overlap with SysML, so the language was easy to pick up. This book was also a moderately entertaining read, in the sense that the examples used were uncommon, given my background in business computer systems; example systems included an automotive sub-system, a water distiller system, as well as surveillance and security systems. I can't even count the number of times I have read texts where the illustrative example was either an account (e.g. bank account) or retail system. Not only did these examples keep the presentation fresh, they really showed off the advantages of SysML.

My purpose in reading this book was essentially to learn what SysML was, why there was a need for it (when we already have UML), and, to a lesser extent, look at an example of a language defined via UML profile. From the Business Analyst perspective, what I found was surprisingly useful.

First, SysML doesn't bother to re-invent the UML. This is an advantage of defining a language by extension. A useful subset of UML is incorporated, mostly as is. To this, SysML adds some missing by essential properties and elements. For example SysML adds support for parametric modeling, so, with the proper tool support, simulations can validate that design options will satisfy constraints.

Most importantly (from a BA perspective), Requirements are added as first-class elements of the model. SysML adds notation for relationships to Requirements, such as containment, satisfaction, and verification. The SysML abstract syntax is as good a starting point for maintaining requirements traceability as I have seen.

This book will prove useful to many types of readers. Obviously those involved in traditional System Engineering projects (airplane design, weapons systems, etc.) will find this a valuable introduction/referance on SysML. Systems modeling is often widely applied, but in an ad hoc fashion, so I would also encourage those in various disciplines to check this book out; SysML could potentially foster cross-disciplinary understanding, but it certainly could inform readers from various systems sub-disciplines (Biology, Geology, Sociology, etc.) of best practices for modelers.

Finally I recommend this book to those within my own field of Business Analysis. Although UML is suficient for modeling many parts of the systems we analyze, it fails to capture some elements of our domain, most notably Requirements. I also have supplemented the UML in my own practice with Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs), especially for defining project scope (the context diagram). This book is the first that I have seen to present a credible alternative notation for this usage, the Internal Block Diagram.

A practical guide it is!

Unlike another book I was also using, this one truly is practical. SySML being a subset of UML, there aren't many books available on this subject. This one is clear, concise and easy to follow. I just wish I'd bought the Kindle version for portability.

Excellent reference, poor learning guide

This book is the encyclopedia of SysML. It is an excellent reference if you already know what MBD/MBSE is about and what SysML is. That having been said, if you are looking to learn SysML, this book is not presented in a manner that is easily approachable or digestible to a novice who is not already practiced in the art.

Entertaining, funny, and yet eye-opening at the same time.

i really enjoyed this read and it happened to include one of the funniest chapters i've ever read in my life. it was a great insider's point of view into another realm of the financial world that i don't think most people have a great understanding of. it's also a very candid look at yet another great travesty in the way compensation schemes are set up...particularly in the US. if you have a wealth manager / financial advisor / private banker / stockbroker, you understand that in many cases your welfare is not their top priority. if you don't already understand this, congrats...it reminds me of the saying that if you don't know who the fool in the room is...it's probably you.

Schmoozing Geek Who Can Write

This was a super read. It's well written, engrossing, and has a number of laugh-out-loud passages. Kidd takes a convoluted topic and makes it understandable to the layperson and fun to read - quite an achievement. It's an insider's view of what may seem to an outsider like a very desirable job - private banking. If you're hoping to make your millions in finance you'll definitely want to read this first. I'm late for work because I couldn't put it down. Five stars for sure!

Valerie Ramsey radiates an enthusiasm and a zest for life that is contagious. Her "carpe diem" attitude practically jumps off the page at the reader, reminding us of how precious life is and how every moment is a bouquet of possibilities, even the tough ones. "Youth really does come in all ages." says the author. And then she goes on to show us how vitality is a state of being and attitude makes all the difference. This mother of six, who began a mid-life career at 53, became a runway and print model at 63 and published author and speaker at 68, has had her fair share of serious life challenges but she has handled each with startling intelligence, practicality, grit and GRACE. With every chapter and in each story she offers the reader wise and down to earth ideas to inspire us so that we can create the best possible "what's next" for ourselves. Finally a voice of optimism and joy

When I turned 50, many of my 50-year old friends shared their dispirited outlook on the future. "No one wants to hire a 50-year old woman", "Menopause feels like watching your hormones pool at your feet". They called it denial, but I didn't want to hear it and went searching for a more optimistic voice. Valerie has such an inspiring, encouraging story about enjoying great success in her 60s and beyond. I had a chance to meet her and she exudes happiness. She's the real deal, and some of my 50-year old friends need to re-consider their perspective on aging--and, maybe give the gift of Valerie's book rather than their gift of despair!! :-)

This short story centers on Quark and his attmept to acquire eclusive distrubution rights to what amounts to a pornographic holo-program called Vulcan Love Slave IV. Its odd for a star trek story BUT fits what we know of the Ferengi and Quark. Its a fun, quick and enjoyable read. While the story deals with a holo program called Vulcan Love Slave, which seems to be future porn - it should be noted that this story is not pornogrpahic in nature. Every is implied. Spend the $2.99. Its a well written, enjoyable, light read.

Great short story and insight into a part of the Star Trek universe.

This is a very entertaining short story. Shortly after the opening of the new DS9, Quark's bar is floundering. Nobody is coming to the bar. An old acquaintance appears and gives him a taste of a new holosuite program that would greatly help business, but she quickly disappears. Undaunted, Quark tracks down the publisher of the previous installments of the program at a conference (think of a galactic Comic-Con) and finds out that he knows nothing of the new installment. Quark and his easily forgettable new protege are contacted by the programmer of the program, and it becomes a race to take the programmer to safety from the angry publisher. In the end, Quark gets exclusive rights to the program and business is booming again.

The program is called Vulcan Love Slave. If you ever wondered what 24th century Ferengi pornography is like, this is definitely the book for you! It's still an entertaining read and an insight into a part of the Star Trek universe you might not have given much thought to.

Great, fast-paced read. It was a lot like watching an episode of DS9, but way better. Highly recommend for anyone wishing to catch up with what's happening with Quark in the ST universe.

Strangers aren’t allowed in Despair, he’s told, and two cops arrive to drive him out to the city limits. You can run Reacher out of town, maybe, but you sure as hell can’t keep him out. Forming an unlikely alliance with a female cop in the neighboring town that’s called—you guessed it—Hope, Reacher sneaks back to Despair and finds all manner of strange goings-on: the creepy burg is run by a megalomaniac entrepreneur who is using his metal-salvage business for something definitely snarky. Rare miss for Child

Disappointing. After reeling off 11 good to (often) great Reacher novels, Lee Child struck out with this one. It starts promising enough. Despair had all the makings of a great stage for Reacher to be Reacher, reminiscent of the Killing Floor. But the promise is never fulfilled. The meandering plot doesn't pull you in. Unlike previous stories, the villain is flat, two dimensional and far from frightening - a death sentence for any story of good vs. evil. The action is sparse.

Previous Reacher novels were impossible to put down. You were torn between your desire to get to the end and your hope that the story would keep going. After all, it would be another year before you got the next one. Sadly, that was not true here. The ending seemed slapped on, left lots of loose ends untied and seemed very uncharacteristic for Reacher. But worst of all, it didn't come too soon. It could have come 100 pages sooner.

These were the big problems with the book. Reacher's detour into politics and criticism of the war did seem out of character but not because I had any assumptions about his politics. He always struck me as outside of politics - outside of almost everything for that matter.

Lee, everyone is entitled to a miss, especially after the roll you have been on. Here is hoping the next one is back to your old form

Shockingly pedestrian

After reading about 8 of Child's Jack Reacher books, I finally found a dud. It started out thrilling, as expected, but quickly become almost boring. I can not believe I am typing those words.

Reacher's repeatedly doing the same thing, over and over (returning to a bad place) was tedious and so unlike our hero's usual behavior. The plot wandered all over the place and the book was too long.

I found it impossible to buy into the far-fetched "conspiracy theory" with its pathetic "villains" and was surprised at Child's foray into political opinion (putting his opinions into Reacher's mouth -which completely changed Reacher's character). This was totally out of place, I thought, and awkward at best.

I just hope that Child has not run out of stories and that he will return Reacher to his previous inventive adventures.

I only read the Amazon reviews after finishing the book, and must say I am not surprised that there are 110 reviews and the average is an abyssmal 2.5 stars. Most of his other books have averaged 4 stars.

"Nothing to Lose" except time wasted reading this one.

Lee Child/Jack Reacher novels are "Gotta get the hardback today" books for me. His previous efforts range from very good to great. His plots/locales have varied, but his formula for a page-turning thriller has not. "Nothing to Lose" not only lacked the usual page-turner formula, but was actually a chore to finish. This novel has to be compared to Child's previous efforts to appreciate it's failings.
"The Hook"- Child can set the hook like no other author. The action starts hard and heavy, and is mysterious enough to keep the reader engaged. "Nothing to Lose" had no hook. By page 45, I was still waiting for the hook to get me interested. Never happened.
"The Bad Guys"- Child always has fascinating and diabolical bad guys, often with a clever plot twist to throw reader off of who's good-who's bad. But by the end of the novels, I can't wait for Jack to take care of these guys as he always does. The End Times preacher was a [yawn] low-grade baddie who [yawn] only truly gets defined as a baddie after he's been blown up [yawn].
"The Roller Coaster"- Every Reacher book to date has hit a point where I cannot put it down until it is finished. I call this the "top of the roller coaster"- usually about 100 pages from the end. 3 AM, have to be up at 7AM- too bad. Have to finish the Reacher book. In Nothing to Lose, 75 pages from the end, I just lost interest, and put it down for three days. I forced myself to finish it.
"Politics"- If Lee Child is actually interested in continued sales of his novels, he might be wise to realize several points. Jack Reacher probably doesn't have mass appeal for left-wingers, peaceniks, or academic liberals. Also, the Jack Reacher character is almost by definition apolitical. "Nothing to Lose" is basically a platform for Child to espouse his anti-Iraq War, anti-administration views and twist them into a discoherent plot.
"Memorability"- Within one hour of finishing most Reacher novels, I could recite a fairly tight outline of the main story lines. It's now an hour since I finished Nothing to Lose, and realize I can't do it. Let me try. Jack wanders back and forth from Despair to Hope. Beats up some guys who weren't really bad, but pissed him off. Goes back and forth a few more times and occasionally beats up some more guys. Finds out the town is weird with something going on. Gov't/current administration coverup of gross failures in Iraq exposed. Pitiful brain injured Iraq vet demonstrated for all to see. Pipeline for military deserters desperate to escape duty in Iraq and head to Canada left unexposed. Gets the babe. Blows up the dirty bomb which really wasn't that dirty. The end. Hmmmm.
Technical Accuracy- OK. It's just a story. A few loose ends are inevitable and forgivable. Truth can be stretched for novels sake. Nothing to Lose took these liberties to the point of constant distraction. Acute radiation sickness from depleted uranium??? Come on. Massive Abrams battle tank losses covered up by the gov't??? Come on. His description of a chronic brain-injured patient was so off base it was distracting. (If Child would like an MD/surgeon to proof his next book, I volunteer).
In summary, No Hook, Bland Bad Guys, an 8 ft. roller coaster, politically polluted, unmemorable, and technically inaccurate. Worst Reacher book of all times. I think I'll wait for the paperback when "Gone Tomorrow" comes out.

Ron Mittelhammer is a Regents Professor of Economic Sciences and Statistics at Washington State University. He has over 250 publications and presentations to his credit, including 100 refereed journal publications.�He is a celebrated teacher at the graduate level, receiving national and university-wide awards for instruction, including the AAEA Award for Distinguished Graduate Teaching, the Washington State University Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award in Teaching, and the WSU-CAHNRS Teaching Excellence Award. Is It Any Surprise That This Is a Great Novel?

Having finished Dark Intelligence: Transformation Book One by Neal Asher I am in the unfortunate position of having to patiently wait for the next book to come out.
I recall that feeling well, from the times (not altogether so long ago) when I was impatiently waiting for each of the Ian Cormac novels to be released.
There are exceedingly few authors, maybe a dozen I can think of, who never disappoint me...and Asher is absolutely near the top of that list. He's right there with Jonathan Maberry, Alastair Reynolds, Peter Watts, Richard K. Morgan, and Neal Stephenson as far as the authors I would list as being the best currently writing material that in any way would be associated with the science fiction genre...though both Maberry and Stephenson tend to cross over a number of genres in the process.
Dark Intelligence, like many of Asher's novels, weaves together a convoluted plot with a frenetic pace that few could contain in words with the skill that Asher pulls off.
The characters, even relatively minor ones, end up feeling like fully realized individuals...more impressive in the cases of those who are suffering from pretty severe identity crises, and there are a few of those included in this narrative.
I was happy to see both Amistad and Penny Royal back again, having found their previous presences in Asher's novels to be fascinating. I was also pleased to get more of an introduction to the Atheter; after reading The Technician and some short fiction, I was very interested in delving further into what was going to happen on the planet Masada.
I suspected that I was going to end up loving this book before I had placed it on preorder, but it exceeded my expectations.

The Polity Continues to Expand

Neal Asher has come a long way in the last few years from a very good, hard science fiction author in the galactic empire tradition to an emerging novelist in the Iain M.Banks universe of AI projection. The Polity does not yet have the sophistication and irony of Banks' Culture Series but it is on a parallel route. Dark Intelligence does more to explore the possibilities of truly massive intelligence that we are beginning to realistically imagine than the more limited intelligence of the Culture AI.

Dark Intelligence plays with the problem of human mentality and the problems that being created in human image could cause for sentient systems designed for war. In this sense Asher follows closely in the military SciFi genre but greatly expands the range of psychological characterization in the play between intelligence and human. And what is human is a very real question as we move to create artificial minds that can continue to expand far beyond what we can imagine.

In the end its a story of greed, guilt, and repentance. If we have the power how do we replace and rebalance the damage caused by a period of insanity? It is a satisfying story without too many loose ends. The Culture series started from a higher quest to understand full technology in a post-scarcity culture. Asher isn't there yet but he is beginning to work well with the Polity universe that creates all the questions to be answered.

Great exploration of the nature of conflict & the extent to which biological context shapes conflict, rehabilitation, redemption

I've read all of Neal Asher's Polity works, and this one builds on the complexities of the Polity culture, science and individual characters very nicely, sometimes even brilliantly. Additionally, MANY characters and events from the previous novels are mentioned or even play some role, either major or minor. In some cases, this advances the story for these characters in a very satisfying way. Asher melds a bit of the horrific in with all his Polity works, but not in any way gratuitously, rather, as context and consequence, and this same is present in Dark Intelligence.

What surprised me most was a follow-up novel focused on Penny Royal the rogue AI! Not expected, at least by this reader! In addition to broader themes of rehabilitation and redemption, there is a very specific and thoughtful theme explored here on the question of conflict and the biological context in which the combatants find themselves, which changes quite radically throughout the book ( these biological changes are, on one level, examples of the "Transformation" referred to by the name of this new trilogy). In addition to Penny Royal, who we see through the eyes of others in the main, I really enjoyed the Prador Father-Captain, SVERL, and his inner conflict as he, to, is "transformed".

Overall, I enjoyed this latest edition to the Polity works immensely, and, other than the 4 books of the Cormac arc, this may emerge as my favorite sub-set of the Polity works! Promising indeed! Highly recommended to both existing and new Polity universe readers, as the former will be deeply immersed in the intricacies of the Polity once again, for good or ill, while those new to the Polity can likely pick up here with little consequence to their overall enjoyment.
