About the Author
Paul D. Groves is a lecturer and academic faculty member at University College London (UCL), where he leads research into robust positioning and navigation within UCL s Space Geodesy and Navigation Laboratory. Previously, he was a scientist with QinetiQ, Ltd, specializing in navigation systems. Dr. Groves is a chartered physicist, a member of the Institute of Physics, a fellow of the Royal Institute of Navigation, and a member of the Institute of Navigation. He studied at the University of Oxford, where he earned a B.A., in physics, an M.A., and a D.Phil. in atomic and laser physics.

Outstanding!

I have finished this text cover to cover. It took a week, the first time I've been able to read an INS/GPS text kind front to back (and I have several). Dr. Groves doesn't skimp on the mathematics. He fills the gaps in the derivations that other texts leave unfilled. And he does it with a notation that is rigorous (considering the reference frames involved) and consistent from the beginning to the end. There is a 7-page, 350-entry List of Key Symbols (matrices, vectors, scalars, subscripts and superscripts, qualifiers), again consistent from beginning to end despite the range of topics covered. My point is that the reader isn't stumped mathematically getting from one section to another (though some page turning is required). And the range of topics? INS, GNSS and Kalman obviously, but also magnetics, gravity gradiometry, barometrics, depth, radar, odometry, pedestrian mounted IMUs, radio navigation, cell phones, SLAM, map matching, et cetera. This does make for a long book, however. Groves brings the same level of care and consistency to his Matlab scripts, which are worth several times the cost of the text. The Matlab corpus hangs together and appears to be the work of a single author, not that of a collection of disparate graduate students. And if you're not into Matlab, there are Excel spreadsheets that appear to cover much of the same ground. The mission of this text is not to exhibit the brilliance of the author, but to teach. And it succeeds brilliantly. I wish it was around when I started!

AN EXCELLENT NAVIGATION SYSTEMS RESOURCE!!

Are you a professional engineer or scientist in industry, academia, and government? If you are, then this book is for you. Author Paul D. Groves (Author), has done an outstanding job of writing a second edition of a book that covers navigation of air, land, sea, underwater, and space vehicles, both piloted and autonomous, together with pedestrian navigation.

Author Groves, begins by introducing the basic concepts of navigation technology, compares the main technologies, and provides a qualitative overview of the material covered in the body of the book. Next, the author provides the mathematical and physical foundations of navigation. Then, he shows you how the Kalman filter may be adapted for practical use in navigation applications. In addition, the author describes the basic principles of accelerometer, gyro, and IMU technology, compares the different types of sensor, and reviews the error sources. He continues by focusing on the navigation processor. The author then describes commonly used dead-reckoning techniques other than inertial navigation, together with a number of techniques for measuring attitude, height, and depth. Next, he explains the physical principles of radio positioning and discusses the characteristics that are common across the different technologies, both spacebased and terrestrial. Then, he provides an introduction to satellite navigation and describes the satellite signals and orbits. In addition, he describes how GNSS user equipment processes the signals from the satellites to obtain ranging measurements and then a navigation solution. The author continues by reviewing a number of techniques that enhance the accuracy, robustness, and reliability of GNSS. He then describes the main features of long- and medium-range radio positioning systems other than GNSS, and focuses mainly on self-positioning. Next, the author describes the main features of short-range radio positioning systems. Then, he describes position-fixing and dead-reckoning techniques based on environmental feature matching, including map matching, terrain-referenced navigation, and image-based navigation. In addition, the author focuses on INS/GNSS integration, covering the loosely coupled, tightly coupled, and deeply coupled integration architectures. He continues by describing INS alignment, the application of zero updates when the system is stationary, and context-dependent motion constraints. The author then covers multisensor integrated navigation, reviewing the different architectures and describing the integration of dead-reckoning, attitude, height, and position-fixing measurements. Next, he describes fault detection and integrity monitoring, including a summary of common failure modes, a review of the different methods of fault detection, a discussion of integrity certification. Finally, the author discusses how technology may be deployed to meet the requirements of a wide range of navigation applications and discusses future trends.

This most excellent book focuses on the physical principles on which navigation systems are based, how they generate a navigation solution, how they may be combined, the origins of the error sources, and their mitigation. Pithily Writing - a joy to read!

Short and sweet book. Naftalin has gone to a lot of trouble to write succinctly and pithily (a word that I learned from his book). It is a pleasure to read. No waffling, just great example and excellent prose. I re-read some paragraphs several times, as they were so beautifully constructed. For example:

"A 40-year trend of exponentially increasing processor speed had been halted by inescapable physical facts: signal leakage, inadequate heat dissipation, and the hard truth that, even at the speed of light, data cannot cross a chip quickly enough for further processor speed increases."

Really enjoying this technical book, that obviously took a huge effort to produce.

Excellent book that teaches you how to think as a functional programmer

Maurice Naftalin is the author of another famous book “Java Generics and Collections” and maintains the lambda FAQ from which he has gained a lot of experience about the new λ-API (JSR-335). The result of this long experience has been this new book on Java 8 lambdas.
The book tackles difficult topics and doesn't provide simple examples to just demonstrate the API usage. The author tries to introduce the reader on the new way of thinking in a functional way by using his experience in solving complex problems. E.g. he writes an implementation of the UNIX grep command using lambdas and explains how to do it and what errors one has to tackle to achieve their target.
Five reasons why you should buy this book:
- It is small and concise; personally, I have more chances to finish a book of 175 pages (and I did) than a book of 500 or 1000 pages.
- The author tries to get you into thinking as a functional programmer; he doesn’t offer you the solution in your plate.
- It is well structured and easy to find what you want
- It is a book that you will return to again and again
- It tackles performance issues in a multi-core world and provides useful advice on performance pitfalls and anti-patterns.
"Expensive perfumes come in small bottles" they say. Small and to the point, all in all a very useful book on the subject, one that you ‘ll revisit again and again while programming with the new lambdas and stream APIs in Java 8. Maurice’s new book should be under the pillow of every Java developer that wants to learn about λ and streams in Java 8.

Mastering lambdas is the second book I've read about lambda. The first one, that i'll use for comparison, was "Java 8 in action" (which is about Java 8 in general, not only lambdas).

This one is written in the same precise style as the very good (and relatively little known) "Java generics and collections", of which Naftalin is a co-author. Some of the content (exception management, performance considerations,...) can't be found anywhere else. On the other hand J8IA is not as well written, but it covers one important technique that "Mastering lambdas" doesn't (using CompletableFutures with Streams).

Overall it's a great book. Also because it's so concise, it's not too thick and can be read in a few days.

This review is based on the printed version, not the Kindle edition (that i didn't try).

CHAPTER 1: Taking Java to the Next Level

The book begins with the now usual explanation of how in a multi-core context, going from external to internal iteration lets the java runtime utilize new "degrees of freedom", particularly to enable parallelism.
A structured explanation of the main programming model changes

From anonymous inner classes to lambdas: All that can logically be inferred by the compiler is introduced step by step
From collections to streams: The old model of chaining transformations by creating a new Collection at every step is bad from performance (creating a lot of intermediary objects), and also pollutes the code with boilerplate. The solution is to use unix-like pipes and filters, which are lazy and compose into pipelines better than classes.
From sequential to parallel: Parallelism is explicit, but unobstrusive, using just parallelStream().
Lazyness: The intermediate operations don't pull any data from the pipeline's source. Work is only done when it can't be delayed anymore, which is at the pipeline's terminal operation.

CHAPTER 2:The Basics of Java Lambda Expressions
The grammar of lambdas

This chapter goes in more detail into the grammar of lambdas. The compiler's inference engine is well explained, which makes lambdas feel less magical than in the usual presentations. The part on the different kinds of method handles is much better than what I read so far (i didn't get the difference between instance bound and instance unbound references before).
From basic stuff to more advanced topics

It goes progressively:

Expression lambdas and statement lambdas
Differences with anonymous classes (ex: doesn't have to be a new instance every time)
Syntax, scope, and capture rules (unlike Javascript the value, and the not the variable, is captured)
java.util.function: the starter kit of functional interfaces
Type inference rules
Method references kinds: static, instance bound, instance unbound (for those, invocation target is the first lambda argument)
Detailed rules: checked exceptions handling, overload resolution

CHAPTER 3:Introduction to Streams and Pipelines
Goals of pipelining operations

A pipeline fuses multiple logical operations into one single pass on the data, like with unix pipes. Pipelines are composed of:

a source
intermediate operations (composed from the API's Stream->Stream methods)
a terminal operation

The most common of each are listed in this chapter.

An important point is that composing stream operations into a pipeline is only a logical transformation, which doesn't pull any data from the pipeline's source yet.

Another advantage of streams related to lazy processing is short-circuiting: for some operations, if a result is found, the rest can be skipped (ex: if we want to check that a property is true for all elements, we can skip the rest of the stream if we find one element for which it's false).
One unclear point in this chapter

"As we saw in �3.1, calling the terminal operation of a pipeline results in the execution of a fusion of its intermediate operations. As a result, the usual debugging technique of stepping through operations is not available for streams..." For sure, I can place a breakpoint in a lambda (tested with Eclipse and IntelliJ):

That's one advantage over .NET lambdas, where I can't stop at the same breakpoints (tested with C# 4.5 in Visual Studio). I think the author means that there is no breakpoint corresponding to completion of a single filter of the pipeline, because execution order is not the same as with external iteration. The previous code displays this:

A good start but a bit too abstract

The information contained herein can be read within five minutes. It describes the various types of abstracts and mostly provides tips in the negative (e.g., don't do this, don't do that) of how not to write one and does not give specific examples of good abstracts. This "book" had all the feel of a college laboratory manual with a section on abstract report writing. That may not be a bad thing if you do not mind paying for that section of the lab manual only.

This book is the proceedings of the international conference THICCAPFA7 that was titled “New Approaches to the Analysis of Large-Scale Business and E- nomic Data,” held in Tokyo, March 1–5, 2009. The letters THIC denote the Tokyo Tech (Tokyo Institute of Technology)–Hitotsubashi Interdisciplinary Conference. The conference series, titled APFA (Applications of Physics in Financial Analysis), focuses on the analysis of large-scale economic data. It has traditionally brought physicists and economists together to exchange viewpoints and experience (APFA1 in Dublin 1999, APFA2 in Liege ` 2000, APFA3 in London 2001, APFA4 in Warsaw 2003, APFA5 in Torino 2006, and APFA6 in Lisbon 2007). The aim of the conf- ence is to establish fundamental analytical techniques and data collection methods, taking into account the results from a variety of academic disciplines.

A lovely achievement

With The Inexplicable Logic of my Life, author Benjamin Alire Saenz returns to a theme of his first novel Carry Me Like Water: the idea of what makes a family. I loved his exploration of that in the first novel, and I love that he again tackles the subject in this beautiful novel for young adults. While many think that blood determines family, I have long believed we make our own family, quilted together from those that we love and that love us, blood-related or not. The Inexplicable Logic of my Life tells of high school senior Salvador; his best friend Samantha; his father Vicente—the man who adopted him; his friend Fito; and his loving grandmother Mima, Vicente’s mother. There is not even a tiny bit of blood connecting Salvador to any of these people, and yet they are his family, bonded more tightly than any family ever. The novel is a tale of love and loss. There is plenty of death in this book, but there is no drama. Saenz writes of life, in all its simplicities and complexities, and life includes death. But one thing I particularly liked here is that the author makes clear something I’ve long believed: nobody ever dies; they live on in our hearts, guiding us and comforting us when we need them. And this is a powerful message to teen readers who, mostly, have not experienced much loss in their young lives. It is also a truth that those who have had loss need to hear. And Saenz makes his point quietly, beautifully, and with evocative poetry. This is the kind of great writing that teen readers need to experience. The narrative flows, the characters are true, and all the while, there is an underlying current of song. Saenz also speaks of the duality of the human spirit. He pointedly has Samantha call Salvador by the effeminate nickname Sally, while Salvador calls Samantha Sam. Through this suggestion, we see that these are full rich people, embodying stereotypical traits that we associate with both sexes. Sam is tough, yet tender. Salvador is sweet, yet combatant. And we, as readers, know that this is what makes people full and great. The Inexplicable Logic of my Life is a lovely achievement, a novel of power and beauty. The Inexplicable Feels

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life by Benjamin Alire Sáenz can be described in one word: beautiful. This coming of age novel is a brilliant portrayal of love and family.

Logic is the story of Salvador Silva. Salvador has a life surrounded by warmth and acceptance–a life filled with family, but during his senior year, his predictable life is thrown off kilter by heartbreaking news and Salvie struggles through the change. Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s novel is dynamic, moving, uplifting, and so lovely that it’s nearly incomprehensible. It’s a piece of art and I so enjoyed reading it. More so, I enjoyed feeling it.

I’ve been in love with this author since I discovered his masterpiece Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. That novel is a level of perfection that I’ve rarely experienced, one that still leaves me speechless and incapable of adequately descibing its magic. Like A&D, The Inexplicable Logic is filled with wonder. It’s magic is unique and long-lasting, and one I vigorously recommend.

This novel gracefully touches on themes of self-discovery (of course), love, grief, and meaning in life. This novel is Sal’s story, and is told entirely from his perspective, but it’s also his family’s story. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story where love bursts from the seams. It’s big, bright bold, and yes, beautiful. The characters are dynamic and oh-so lovable—I felt their joy and their pain.

I feel like Sáenz’s writing is made for me. His prose is stark and impactful, simple and meaningful. I could live in his mind forever and ever, because he shows me just what I need to see to understand what is important. His writing envelops me and makes me feel safe, even as he breaks my heart, because I know that he writes with love.

The Inexplicable Logic of My Life is fiction that shows us the reality that we should strive for. Yes, it’s a novel for young adults, but we all need to learn the lessons Sáenz teaches. Whistle in the dark, love, love love, forgive, rage, be heartbroken, but have faith and hope. In this novel, Sal’s connection with his father is impregnable and a force of nature—all the characters’ connections are. When Sáenz writes he makes you feel as if you belong, and that he’s pulling you into this wonderful world he creates. The same world we live in, we see through his eyes and start to believe in all the good he sees once we’ve turned the last page and look up in wonder. That makes Benjamin Alire Sáenz a force of nature and The Inexplicable Logic of My Life a phenomenon that all should experience.

Changed my life

Such a good book ... I loved this book, and I might say that about a lot of books, but this ... this was different. This was life-changing. I cried, I laughed, I felt good, I wondered, I felt alive Reading this piece of art!

WARNING! (some might feel this is a spoiler, so you have been warned!)
I also loved that the two main characters were a boy and a girl (both heterosexual) that did not have romantic feelings about each other. They loved each other like Brother and sister/ bestfriends. It was beautiful. I tend to dislike characters in books that are parents, because they often are boring to me. In this book, that was not the case. I loved Sal's dad. What an amazing individual! And he doesn't even exist! I feel like I know all these amazing and horrible and beautiful People I met in this book. They feel real to me.
I loved Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the universe, and I did not expect to ever read a book that captured and moved me like it did ever again .... but then I read this one. And - dare I say it? - I loved this one even more, I think. Please read this book. It might change Your life.

Good book.

Gives a great lay-out and explanation of concepts without overwhelming the reader. You can use this as an overview of topics, and then go to something like GM's Repertoire for more in-depth thoughts on particular ideas.

Would need someone better than me to give a more formal review. 1812 FIDE.

A decent survey of 1.e4 e5, but....

The "Starting Out" series of books tend to be of mixed instructive value. Some are more "talky" than others, emphasizing explanations and giving basic annotations that are easy to understand for the novice to intermediate level player (say 1100 to 1500 elo). Others go in the opposite direction, focusing more on long variations ending with not-so-helpful explanations such as "...and white is better here" or "...black seems to have more pull in this position". This book tilts towards the latter group.

While these types of books are fine for more experienced players (and are perhaps preferable for them), someone buying a "Starting Out" book is probably not an advanced chess player, and will instead want something that explains to them in detail why certain moves are played and what basic themes and strategies they should keep in mind. In this, the book provided minimal value.

So if you're a somewhat experienced player (about 1500 elo), and you're looking for a survey of all the openings associated with 1.e4 e5, this may be a decent book for you. Otherwise, there's not much to recommend it to lower rated players.

This book is called Starting Out...it can be misleading, however it is also quite deep and it can provide you with a good knowledge of the particular opening.
I purchased it because I already own 1 book from Glenn Flear ( The Ruy Lopez Main Line ), and I found it very usefull.
