Excellent choice for PCP

This review is for the 2006 (9th) edition. The subject matter is well laid out making it easy to find pertinent information. The paper quality is excellent providing for good quality color photos. Note it is a "manual" not a comprehensive text, but for 99% of a PCP's needs it is just what is called for.

The latest edition is about 75 pages longer adding a extra chapter on skin cancer, one on STDs, one on technological dermatology (?lasers). It is not clear to me that the price of the newer edition is justified given the modest cost of the 9th edition.

Excellent dermatology book for students and PCPs

This is a comprehensive and well-illustrated review of dermatology for students and primary care providers. The book starts with fundamentals of dermatology (structure of the skin, lab procedures, dermatologic therapies, cutaneous surgery for the generalist, immunology/ allergies, and cosmetic dermatology for the generalist), then continues with inflammatory skin diseases, infectious diseases, tumors, and diseases affecting the hair, nails, and mucous membranes. The last chapter focuses on skin diseases in specific populations (pediatric, geriatric, pregnancy), tropical diseases, sports medicine, as well as cutaneous manifestation in diseases of other organs and systems, pigmentary dermatoses, and skin reactions to UV radiation. The book provides about 2 pages of print and online resources for further information. The index has small color pictures of common skin conditions, so if the picture was all one needed, it's right there.

Most (but not all) of the copious errors in earlier editions have been fixed.

(Brualdi maintains an errata list on his website.) I like this book a lot,

it has a nice, relaxed style of exposition and the choice of topics is good

for an introductory course.

Interesting Problems, Too Many Mistakes

I used the book to guide me through a Combinatorics class I took in the summer of 1998. The author has presented some very interesting problems like prove that of any 10 points chosen withen an equlateral triangle of side length 1, there are 2 whose distance apart is at most 1/3 that use some interesting techniques such as the pigeonhole principal. The book, however contained too many mistakes. My professor said on average there is one mistake per page and he wasn't exagerating either. Luckily with his help, we corrected the many mistakes and then were successfully able to use the book. I notice that the author has written a new edition. I hope most of the mistakes have been corrected because when I pay a good sum of money for a book I expect it to be good book without errors.

I'm very surprised that this book is in its 5th edition and it still has a many errors. There are even errors in statements of theorems, which is really scary, and many errors in the back of the book where you are supposed to be able to check your answers.

I have very little faith in this textbook. If it weren't in use for my course (and I'm not sure why it is, because I have yet to find its good qualities) I would never have bought it.

Hopefully the publishers hire a math grad student or two for editing the sixth edition.

If you enjoy reading about mountaineering and get some insight into the personalities of some of the famous climbers and what motivates them to climb some of the most dangerous mountains, like K-2, this is the book to read. I enjoyed reading it immensely and was unable to put the book down.

More ramblings than events

Unlike the other reviewer, I was puting the book down alot. Finally after 1/4 way through, I just gave up. It does not read like other mountaineering books where you get a beginning, a middle and an end. I felt like I came in on the middle and 1/4 way through I was still there, bouncing from thought to thought without any cohesion. I realize since I didn't get very far, perhaps the beginning manifests itself and it will all make sense in the end.

A good book but more background info than I expected. However, it is all justified when one considers the criticism of others by those that were not there to experience it all. I truly admire these individuals!!

A MAJOR pulp character back in print

Starting in 1919 L. Patrick Greene wrote almost 100 stories taking place in then current Africa. These stories appeared in some of the finest pulp adventure magazines and where immensely popular at the time, but are all but lost. Now thanks to Matt Moring and the staff at Altus Press they are all coming back.

The Major (Aubrey St. John) a Britsh dandy who is always an upright proper and prim gentlemen is accompanied by his faithful servant a Hottentot native Jim. The Major and Jim are much more a team then Master and Servant. Think
Lone Ranger and Tonto or Green Hornet and Kato.

The stories build on each other and add to the enjoyment. Elements and characters from prevoius stories reenter the scene along the way increasing the fun. The pleasure also comes from the discovery in each story of how the Major and Jim are going to outsmart and outwit their opponents.

L Patrick Greene spent time as a mounted policeman in Rhodesia and he is clearly familiar with his subject matter.

The book comes with an excellent introduction from Ed Hulse publsher of the best current publication on pulp magazines.

Also included is some back matter including a glossary of Arfican terms. At $19.95 for a 300 page small press trade paperback this is also a real bargain. The book includes the first 12 adventures of the Major, and I eagerly await further volumes.

Great!

I first discovered The Major through Black Dog Books and that set me on a path looking for copies of Adventure and Short Stories that had stories of him. This book fills in gaps in my collection and I hope they will see the series to fruition. I think there are over 100 Major stories and I can't wait to read and in some case re-read every last one! Highly recommended series that gets better and better. Buy it.

Excellent Reading!

I didn't know what to expect having never heard of this character. Pleasantly surprised by sharp writing, wonderful characters and exotic adventures. I eagerly await the next volume in this series.
