It is difficult to read Special Ops and not be transported back to the days of one’s youth and games of Army and Spy. As such, Special Ops offers both a great opportunity to read several important training manuals in one concise compilation and to enjoy a nostalgic trip back in our own lives. Special Ops, 1939-1945: A Manual of Covert Warfare and Training could very easily have been called The Dangerous Book for Grown-Ups and the title would have fit very well! Indeed, I have read no book this year which is more appropriate for the Christmas stockings of war buffs and students of spy organizations or anyone who just enjoys intrigue and mischief!"
About the Author
Dr Stephen Bull is the Curator of the Museum of Lancashire in Preston. He has written two major volumes on arms and armour and bestselling volumes on Trench Warfare and World War II Infantry Tactics. He is the author of An Officer's Manual of the Western Front (2007).

Hoodwinked... Expected More...

I give this book three stars. I have been eagerly anticipating this book for a couple of months now and when I got it I was sadly disappointed. This book is a collection of reprinted declassified manuals from various WWII era clandestine organizations (U.S. Office of Stratigic Services, British Special Operations Executive). My problem comes from the fact that all these manuals can be had for free on-line in pdf format. The book does retype/edit the material but left a lot of the original illustrations, diagrams, pictures out of this book. I understand why they would have left these out of the book in some cases. Because of the quality in the originals are very bad in these historical photocopies, so they simply left them out of there version of these publications. I recommend finding the on-line versions to supplement the material left out or just get the originals. Examples of the reprinted material are the "OSS Disguise Manual," "The Partisans Handbook," "OSS Simple Sabotage Manual" to name but a few listed in this book. Overall this book is not bad and an ideal historical reference to operational tradecraft.

The Value of it

This manual is an explicit example of the training SOE operatives went through in times when extreme measures were required in the field.The relatively low tech equipment and illustrations gave me as much insight in my research of that crucial period in the collective history of Europe during WWII.
