Meet Dexter Morgan. He's a highly respected lab technician specializing in blood spatter for the Miami Dade Police Department. He's a handsome, though reluctant, ladies' man. He's polite, says all the right things, and rarely calls attention to himself. He's also a sociopathic serial killer whose "Dark Passenger" drives him to commit the occasional dismemberment.
Mind you, Dexter's the good guy in this story.
Adopted at the age of four after an unnamed tragedy left him orphaned, Dexter's learned, with help from his pragmatic policeman father, to channel his "gift," killing only those who deal in death themselves. But when a new serial killer starts working in Miami, staging elaborately grisly scenes that are, to Dexter, an obvious attempt at communication from one monster to another, the eponymous protagonist finds himself at a loss. Should he help his policewoman sister Deborah earn a promotion to the Homicide desk by finding the fiend? Or should he locate this new killer himself, so he can express his admiration for the other's "art?" Or is it possible that psycho Dexter himself, admittedly not the most balanced of fellows, is finally going completely insane and committing these messy crimes himself?
Despite his penchant for vivisection, it's hard not to like Dexter as his coldly logical personality struggles to emulate emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring, unremarkable human being. Breakout author Jeff Lindsay's plot is tense and absorbing, but it's the voice of Dexter and his reactions to the other characters that will keep readers glued to Darkly Dreaming Dexter, as well as making it one of the most original and highly recommended serial killer stories in a long time. --Benjamin Reese

It's been years since there's been a thriller debut as original as this one by Lindsay, who takes a tired subgenre-the serial-killer novel-and makes it as fresh as dawn. Lindsay's premise alone is worthy: narrator Dexter Morgan, a blood-spatter specialist for the Miami cops, is also a serial killer. But all his life, Dexter has followed the rules set down by his cop foster father (who knew of Dexter's proclivities), to indulge his passion only by slaying other serial killers. What makes this novel zing, though, is the narration-humorous, self-deprecating, smart and sometimes lyrical, it's a macabre fun ride ("I thought about the nice clothes that I always wore. Well of course I did. I took pride in being the best-dressed monster in Dade County"). The story opens with Dexter at play, kidnapping and killing a priest who has murdered a number of children, then moves on to the main plot, a series of gruesome killings of prostitutes by an unknown madman. Dexter's foster sister is a Miami Vice Squad cop working on the killings, so Dexter decides to help her solve the case. This puts him in conflict with a dumb but ambitious female homicide detective as well as, soon enough, the killer himself, whose approach to serial killing mirrors Dexter's own, uncomfortably so. Might Dexter himself be the culprit? The answer feels a bit contrived, but will surprise most readers, and it's a minor flaw in a gripping, deliciously offbeat novel that announces the arrival of a notable new talent.

Dexter Morgan, the namesake of Lindsay's first novel, is one of the most likable vigilante serial killers in recent thriller literature. This is mainly because of his average Joe-ness: he's a Miami police-department blood-spatter analyst with a weakness for bowling shirts and batidos, who, when the moon is full, carves up villains in a careful ritual, keeping a single drop of blood on a slide as a souvenir. (He's collected thirty-six so far.) When other victims start popping up, dispatched with the same creativity as Dexter's, he pursues the copycat murderer with acute professional self-interest. Like other charismatic killers—Hannibal Lecter, say, or Tom Ripley—Dexter has a set of motives that are tough to untangle. But his quest proves weirdly convincing as he ponders whether to turn his doppelg�nger over to the cops or take care of the problem himself.

Delicious

It's not only the unusual story - a serial killer setting himself up as an instrument of vengeance against those who escape justice. It's all those dialogues - Dexter and the audience, Dexter and Deborah and best of all, that inner dialogue between Dexter and his Dark visitor who dwells unbidden until those times it speaks, the almost dripping richness of the language. In between the quirky humor and horrid scenes there are true insights that had me going "Ahhh".

The Micheal Hall television series has to be among the top new shows of the year - sheer perfection. However, although Dexter seems to have walked right out of the pages of the book, it diverges in several areas. La Guerta is a sympathetic character on the show who is not killed. Doakes seems much darker and ominous in the book. The whole episode of the "ice truck" killer was handled differently (and more successfully) on the tube. In fact, although the outcomes and plots were different, it seemed the more "real" of the two. The story line was certainly more captivating - Deborah falling for the bad guy whose real interest is reuniting with his long-lost brother (the two do not resemble on television). My Grade - A++

Ho-hum story and unimaginative writing

Strange that such a clever series with a witty, suave protagonist could have come from this book. I opened Darkly Dreaming Dexter, hoping that the occasionally stiff writing of Showtime's series would be washed away by something far more clever and engaging. Nope. Just the opposite. The book's lead is missing the flair of his TV alter-ego and he seems prone to major idiot-level gaffes. The sharp banter's gone; replaced by tired puns. The season 1 storyline is somewhat on display but apparently, the show's writers improved drastically upon the book's two-dimensional characters and the hurried, poorly-conceived climax.
It's not often I say this but the books aren't worth your time, while the show's one of the best things on television. Dexter in the book isn't charming, isn't smart and isn't all that good as being a serial killer. The book's further saddled with poorly written side-characters and nothing approaching the humor or wit of the series. I only gave the book a 2 because the concept is great. The execution of the book though? I'm all for it.

Different than I expected...in a good way

I had watched the first season of Dexter on DVD and was talking about it at work with one of the kids (I work at a juvenile detention center) and he mentioned that he had read and enjoyed the book. On his advice (and my love for the show), I picked it up. At first I thought it was going to be the first season exactly, but in written form, but as I continued reading I was pleasanty suprised. While some of the book mirrored the first season of the show, a lot of it was quite different. It was a strange read in the begining, with Lindsay's use of alliteration and metaphors, but I got used to it and the book read a lot like Dexter's own thoughts and narations in the show. I found Dexter's character well developed and easy to get into. It was well written, like you almost felt Dexter's emotions...if he had any. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes the tv series. I also purchaced the second and third books and can't wait to read them, even though I heard that Dexter in the Dark was terrible.
