About the Author
Charles Severance is a Clinical Associate Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan where he teaches Informatics courses; he has also taught Computer Science at Michigan State University. Concise, focus on programming in the modern world

I was looking for a good book to teach an introduction to python class from to students in the MS in Business Analytics Program at The University of Texas at Austin.
Most books looked like they'd been written in 1985, with C/Pascal replaced by Python.
Severance's book felt much more modern, with its emphasis on applications like HTTP services and SQL. The treatment of data structures, which tends to be most of the focus for other books, is limited to the key data structures that programmers use everyday, and not implementation details (e.g., Red-Black BSTs), which are not meaningful in this day and age.
I like the short, and to the point writing style, and the supplemental online resources.
Two places for improvements: more exercises, and an online forum to discuss the book (e.g., discourse.org).
This is not the book for you if you want to learn about the details of things like binary search, heaps, shortest path algorithms - for that Cormen, Leiserson, Rivest, and Stein's opus is appropriate.
However, for the vast majority of readers looking to learn enough to start programming real-world in a short time, look no further.

good starting point

I'm using this book in conjunction with the author's free online course, which I also recommend. This is a good place to start if you're new to programming or haven't done it in a while. But, you will need to get (or make up) more practice examples if you want to remember what you learn.

No prerequisites?

The only reason that I give this rating is that the course that Dr. Severance runs on Coursera, associated with this title, says in the description "The course has no pre-requisites and avoids all but the simplest mathematics." I suppose a definition of "simplest mathematics" should be established. I went along in the course and did very well, until we really began putting full strings of code together and it quickly became apparent to me that I needed to do a good deal of remedial work on algebra. I would argue that there is a simpler set of mathematics than algebra (and I'm not just talking about knowing how to eek out some equations, I think it would be important to be able to approach the lessons with a good mind towards algebraic thinking). I would strongly suggest that the "no prerequisites" be changed to indicate a need for a firm handle on algebra. At least for as far as I got in the course before I realized that I had prerequisite work to do. Otherwise the course is fantastic, Dr. Severance's pedagogy is very easy to follow and engage. I at least got far enough to see that I do have a mind for this work and in fact, the assignment that I worked on that made me realize I needed to go back and work on my algebra still excited me because I was able to work out the code to accomplish the task, just in a very roundabout fashion that I could see would be unsustainable in a full sized project in industry. So if the course had the prerequisite warning, I would give five stars.
