Review for the novel - Of Blade and Valor

Writing a novel is a difficult thing to do, it's especially difficult when the author has to create a world unfamiliar to most people and make it believable for the reader. This is a problem faced by writers of science fiction and historical fiction. With Of Blade and Valor, the world recreated here is hundreds of years behind us and so the story writing is especially difficult. Cheryl Alleway has crafted a story that transports the reader back to a wild and lawless time when Scots were at war with the English and life was brutal to say the least. The story has at times the broad sweep of a Hollywood epic and at others a very personal resonance as the actors struggle not only against the English threat to the south but also against the marauding gangs and clan feuds on their own land. The descriptions of the wild terrain in which much of the story takes place are skilfully done, presenting the reader with enough information to visualise the author's understanding of this world. And the author doesn't pull her punches either; some of the battle scenes are blood-thirsty and graphic and not for the faint-hearted. This was a brutal time, conditions for many were wretched. so this is how things should be depicted; to make them twee would not help the story. There is romance here too, as Deb, the lead character, comes of age as the story progresses and she battles against the many obstacles coming her way. The cast of characters is wide too, inter-generational and from a broad range of classes. The wealthy have roles to play here, as do the downright poor, and their roles in that period are captured nicely. I believe this is Cheryl Alleway's first novel and she has done a fine job with this piece of work. The only point I would make (and this is purely a personal preference), I would like the story to have been told from fewer points of view; I think this might have helped make the adventure a little tighter, but as I say, this is just a personal preference.

Review of "Of Blade and Valor"

Cheryl Alleway's "Of Blade and Valor" is an engaging historic tale about a woman with both physical and mental strength. The beautiful protagonist, Deb, is supported and encouraged by an interesting and diverse cast of men, most notable to me, Henry, a wanderer, captivates and intrigues.
I enjoyed the fact that two very powerful and influential characters are not the standard "grand lady of the manor" or the "knight in shining armor". Alleway manages to weave honor and conviction where it may not be expected at a time in history where brute force seems to be the norm: the magic of her first novel.
This novel is a satisfying look at women with strength, courage and wisdom, a story I feel is needed in our time in history more than ever. We are also called to see the valiant when it is least expected.
Much as I wanted to savor the story, I was pulled between the pages until I quickly came to the end. I'm looking forward to Alleway's next book.

I love history for starters and I think the writer has done a great job of research. She certainly has a gift for writing and made me feel the emotions of her characters. Loved it. Looking for to another book
