About the Author
CHRIS MARNEWICK is a senior advocate practicing in Durban, South Africa. He wrote on litigation skills and has taught the subject in both New Zealand and South Africa. His first book was Shepherds & Butchers, first published in South Africa in 2008. The book was shortlisted for the M-Net Literary Award and the Commonwealth Writer's Prize (Africa region) and won the University of Johannesburg Prize.

Death Row Horrors

Crime and trial stories are well written and very gruesome at times.
Anti-capital punishment readers will be horrified at what goes on in death row and in the gallows room.
When reading about the dreadful crimes, pro-hanging readers will say "fair justice" and "an eye for an eye".
Many in South Africa regret that capital punishment was abolished in light of the horrendous crimes committed daily, for which there is no effective deterrent. Poor police work, long delays in getting to trial, laughable sentences, amnesties, early paroles, etc - a very poor and corrupt justice system in the new regime.

A fine and difficult book

I was recommended this book by a friend's father, a former attorney in South Africa. It is a fascinating and harrowing book, and offers a detailed look at the South African legal system in the wake of Apartheid rule. It raises questions about where sympathies truly lie where capital crimes are concerned, as well as the effect of the capital system not just on those punished by it, but on those who administer that punishment.

Gripping

I was recommended the book and when I started I could barely put it down, I read into the early hours of the morning!
The descriptions of Durban (my hometown were refreshingly vivid), the detail of prison life, the details of the cases and the entertwined story of Leon Labuschagne was brilliant.
I've recommended this thrilling and descriptive book to everyone I've spoken to.
